Travelling to Iraq: A country full of history, spirituality and diversity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Iraq, the cradle of ancient civilisations, is not only a destination for those seeking adventure or archaeology: it is also a place of deep spirituality and religious coexistence. Although Karbala:<\/strong><\/a> and Najaf:<\/a> <\/strong>are holy cities of Shi'a Islam, Iraq is home to a rich diversity of communities: Sunni Muslims, Christians, Yazidis, Mandaeans and Jews have lived here for centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article focuses on two places of particular significance to the Shia world, but it is important to stress that Iraq is much more than that<\/strong>. It is a country that welcomes you with open arms, regardless of your religion or nationality, and where the Spanish visitor feels deeply welcomed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Arba\u00edn and why is it so important?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Arba\u00edn<\/a><\/strong> is one of the largest pilgrimages in the world, and takes place 40 days after Ashura, the date commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Husayn, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. This event marks the climax of Shia mourning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Arba\u00edn, millions of pilgrims from all over the world walk on foot to Karbala<\/strong>, covering hundreds of kilometres in what is both an act of devotion and spiritual unity. It is a massive faith experience comparable to Mecca, but also open to non-Muslim visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, for those who prefer to avoid crowds, it is best to travel outside these dates<\/strong>. Karbala and Najaf are fascinating destinations all year round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karbala:<\/a>Hospitality, faith and monumentality<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Shrine of Imam Hussain: A place to be moved by<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In Karbala, the Shrine of Imam Hussain<\/strong> dominates the city. Covered with a golden dome and surrounded by huge courtyards, this complex welcomes millions of pilgrims every year. What is striking is not just its architecture or its symbolism, but the way in which it welcome foreign visitors<\/strong>, with smiles, respect and often, invitations to come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In my experience, as a Spanish tourist, it was surprising to see how we were allowed to pass even into the inner areas of the sanctuary.<\/strong>This is very unusual in other Islamic countries. The whole environment is full of spirituality, but it is also a human warmth that is hard to forget<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don't have to go to Arba\u00edn to feel the devotion<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Although the Arba\u00edn<\/a> is a unique experience, the truth is that Karbala is full of religious life all year round.<\/strong>. Pilgrims are constantly seen praying, making offerings or simply resting in the courtyards of the sanctuary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Travelling to Iraq outside of the major religious dates not only allows for a quieter visit, but also for a more peaceful one, and closer interaction with local people<\/strong>. It is possible to sit back and observe, ask questions, and really connect with the spiritual life of Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Najaf:<\/a>Wisdom, history and architectural beauty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Shrine of Imam Ali: One of the holiest shrines in the Islamic world<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In Najaf is the Shrine of Imam Ali<\/strong>, one of the most revered mosques in Shia Islam and one of the most visited burial sites in the world<\/strong>. The mausoleum, with its gilded dome and meticulous decoration, is a masterpiece of Islamic art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again, foreign tourists are welcome. The interior of the sanctuary is accessible, always with respect and following local rules<\/strong>. The sense of peace here, the constant murmur of prayers, and the beauty of the place make it a must-see, even if you are not a believer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Najaf is also the site of the cemetery of Wadi al-Salam<\/a><\/strong>, considered the largest cemetery in the Islamic world<\/strong>, with more than five million graves<\/strong> that stretch to the horizon. This sacred space, of enormous historical and spiritual value, is recognised by the UNESCO<\/strong> for its cultural and heritage importance, making it a unique place in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fascinating mosques: beyond religion<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The mosques of Najaf and Karbala are not only places of prayer, they are true works of art. Colourful tiles, Arabic calligraphy, domes, mirrors, fountains...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An important thing to bear in mind: you have to enter barefoot<\/strong>, so we recommend that you wear comfortable and clean socks<\/strong>. This little preparation will make your visit much more pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
